Welcome to the Green Auto Power Train Project
Green Auto Power Train is a multi-institutional research project funded by Ontario’s Ministry of Economic Development and Innovation through the Ontario Research Fund. The institutions are University of Windsor, McMaster University, University of Toronto and the University of Waterloo serving as the lead institution. The program of research includes support from private industry and government.
Our Purpose
Green Auto Power Train will advance the state of the art in hybrid engines to power Ontario’s transportation sector with near, medium and long term technological solutions to reduce/eliminate emissions and wean our dependence on fossil fuels while generating new Intellectual Property and competitive advantage for Ontario’s auto sector. The ultimate goal also is to facilitate the development of commercializable products.
The Justification
From the Government of Ontario; “The Ontario government has an ambitious electric vehicle vision to have one out of every 20 vehicles driven in Ontario be electrically powered by 2020.” More
From the Organization of Economic Development and Co-operation’s International Energy Agency; “The vision of our Electric and Plug-in Hybrid (EV/PHEV) Vehicles Roadmap is to achieve by 2050 the widespread adoption and use of EVs and PHEVs which together represent more than 50% of annual LDV (light duty vehicle) sales worldwide.” More
From Canada’s Electric Vehicle Technology Roadmap; “Electricity as an alternative to traditional transportation energy is becoming a near-term reality for many countries, including Canada. Electric vehicles (EVs) will contribute to promoting sustainable energy development while addressing air quality and climate change." More
Our Plan
The Proposed research is organized into three themes that will led by one of the collaborating institutions with support from the entire group of institutions:
- Gasoline-Electric Hybrid Powertrain – presenting Near Term Technological Solutions ; McMaster University
- Diesel-Electric Powertrain – developing the Medium Term Technology ; University of Windsor
- Systems Integration and Optimization – Long Term Technology Development
